Rochester International Classic, World Cup Round 7

Great Britain, August 18, 1997

Report

A late solo burst from Italian Andrea Tafi gave him victory in the seventh round of cycling's World Cup on Sunday. Tafi escaped from four co-leaders in the final 14 kms of the 242 kms Rochester Classic to finish 43 seconds ahead of Andrea Ferrigato, who outsprinted Gianluca Bortolami to complete a clean sweep for Italy.

With three of the 10 rounds still to come, Denmark's Rolf Sorensen is still the overall leader. Tafi's success made him the sixth Italian to win the British round in the last eight years.
