The Tour Feminin starts on August 13 at Saverne but is preceded today (August 12) by what is called a Prelude (the Trophee Internationale) at Lac de Madine over 64km with the same field.

The premier women's race, the Tour includes this year for the first time women's trade teams as well as national teams -- nine of the former, eleven of the latter. The favourite for the race must be previous two-time winner Fabiana Luperini (23), particularly in the absence through injury of veteran French rider Jeannie Longo who crashed on the Hyeres track while training, sustaining a broken collarbone. The dimunitive Luperini (1.56m and 39kg), nicknamed La Pantanina after her distinguished compatriot and fellow-climber Marco Pantani, will have plenty of opportunities to show her climbing prowess but will have also contend with two time trials -- at Montbard (August 15 -- 31.1km) and Le Beausset (August 22) where such riders as Russian Olympic time trial champion Zoulfia Zabirova and the Lithuanian twins Rasa and Yolanta Polikeviciute will try to put pressure on her.

The race finishes on the 24th in a summit finish at Valberg in the Alpes-Maritimes and other major climbs will include a stage finish at Sestrieres (August 16) and the next day a climb of the north side of the Galibier.

Preview with Special Australian Women's Form Guide

As you can see by the number and categories of the climbing, an extremely difficult Tour Feminin this year. Defending champion, Fabiana Luperini from Italy will no doubt be extremely difficult to beat. Last month she won her 3rd straight Giro d'Italia, and is now also looking for her 3rd straight Tour Feminin.

Of the Australians, Kathy Watt and Lyn Nixon have been climbing the best. Kathy Watt will no doubt be looking for high placed finishes in the time trial stages. The time trials are apparently over quite difficult terrain and should suit both Kathy and Lyn.

Elizabeth Tadich is in good form, and not being a strong climber, will be looking for some good performances on the faster stages. Charlotte White and Juanita Feldhahn make up 5 of the 6 in the Australian team, with a final decision this week to confirm the 6th member between Hayley Huch and Kim Palmer.

The rider missing the start in the Australian team will compete for a French composite team.

Prologue Reports

Time does not carry over, but Kupfernagel takes the yellow jersey for the first stage. Before the Tour Feminin started the Dutch team had already a lot of problems. During the trip to France their bus had a tyre burst in the neighbourhood of Bruxelles; later followed by a car-accident. Then the Equipment Bus broke down. Then Yvonne Brunen, the green-jersey winner of last year, had to go back to Holland because she learned that her brother had had a serious accident. The new leader of the team will be Meike de Bruin. The rest of the Dutch team: Angela Hillenga, Edith Klep, Debby Mansveld and Sandra Rombouts.

The "prelude" to the Tour Feminin, which doesn't count towards its overall classification but whose leader takes the stage race's opening golden jersey was run off in high temperatures. Winner Hanka Kupfernagel (23), the wife of her team's directeur sportif, broke clear and attacked strongly, rapidly building a lead of almost four minutes, with Catherine Marsal leading the counter-attack.

Australian Women's Team Report

Following the victory of Lyn Nixon in the 8th Stage, the Australians' race plan was to ride aggressively, hoping to set up another stage win. This tactic nearly paid off in the 114.2km 9th Stage.

Early in the race Elizabeth Tadich attacked, but the strong Sanson team closed down the break very quickly. 45 km into the race Charlotte White was the next to go initiating what was to be the vital break. Valeria Cappellotto (Sanson) went across to Charlotte, setting up a sizeable break of 1.5 minutes, before there was a reaction from the bunch. Valentina Gerassimova (Russia, Isoglass Goodyear) broke from the bunch followed by D. Vogel (Switzerland). Kathy Watt covered the break, being happy to be hauled along.

The two groups came together 10km from the finish, with a formidable 3.5min lead over the main pelaton. With 2 Australians in the group of 5, there was the real possibility of another stage win. It was agreed that Charlotte did not have the legs to tackle the steep uphill finish, having been out in the front break for 65km, so Kathy Watt attacked. The break was covered by Cappellotto and Gerassimova, with the Russian losing contact in the last 2 kilometres.

Watt and Cappellotto raced side by side for the last 500 metres, with the Italian holding out the tenacious Watt.

The Australian team showed for the second day running that smart, tactical team riding pays dividends.
