Manuel Beltrán (Spa) Banesto + 3.08 Report from US Postal TeamContinuing the fine form he displayed in the last week of the Tour de France, the United States Postal Service Pro Cycling Team's Viatcheslav Ekimov won his sixth race of the season today, taking the final stage of the Vuelta a Castilla-Leon, a five stage, 2.4 UCI ranked stage race in Spain.Ekimov, who finished 44th overall at the Tour de France and recorded two top-five stage finishes in the final five stages of the Tour, won today's 180 kilometer stage in typical fashion - attacking the peloton in the last few kilometers leading up to the slight uphill finish. With Banesto and ONCE working at the front to keep the peloton together for a mass field sprint, Ekimov countered with an attack with under two kilometers remaining. The current Russian national road champion was able to solo to the victory, winning the stage in 4 hours, 25 minutes and 39 seconds - one second ahead of the charging field. The USPS' Marty Jemison, also fresh off the Tour de France, led the team in the general classification, finishing 11th overall, 3:25 back of race winner Angel Luis Casero of Banesto. The U.S. Postal Service's Eddy Gragus placed fifth in today's stage. Teammate Sven Teutenberg also came through with two top-five stage finishes in the race, placing second in stage two and fifth in stage one. Coupled with his two stage victories at the Dauphine Libere, stage wins at Paris-Nice and Semana Catalana, and his win in the Russian national road race championship, today's victory continues one of Ekimov's finest professional seasons. As of July 27, Ekimov is ranked 14th overall in UCI points and seventh this season, trailing only Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich and Erik Zabel of Telekom, Mapei's Pavel Tonkov and Johan Museeuw, ONCE's Laurent Jalabert and Banesto's Abraham Olano. In the UCI team classification, the U.S. Postal Service team holds the 18th position. |
