Problems with Rudy Pevenage

The assistant Team Leader of Telekom, Rudy Pevenage, expected another positive reception with his own club in Belgium. He is member of the committee which organises the Climb Criterium at the 'Muur van Geraardsbergen'. However, far from giving him a positive reception on Friday night, the rest of the members blamed Pevenage for not arranging enough 'big names' for this criterium.

Rudy responded: 'But Ullrich has already signed 5 contracts; they can't pay Pantani and Henn is not good enough! Now they blame me. I don't want to work with these dictators anymore and so I am quitting as a member of the Committee."

Jan Ullrich asks for a rest

'I am a sportsperson, not a popstar'

While Jan Ullrich requires a rest; the fans will not give him that chance. "They stay around my house and ask for signatures. I try to give as much as possible; but the fans have to realize that i am a sportsperson and not a popstar."

Every day, around 1,000 fans are coming to the house of Ullrich in Merdingen. Even around the house of friend and mate Jens Heppner it's busy. In the chocolate-shop of Heppner's mother Ullrich signs photocards. There were more than 5,000 supporters around the little shop.

Ullrich: 'I like the enthusiasm. And of course it's nice to see that - after my victory in the Tour de France - cycling is becoming popular in Germany. But the fans don't have to exaggerate.' In autumn Ullrich goes to hospital to have his tonsils removed. After that he wants to go skiing and he wants to go on holiday in Australia. Away from excitement, back to rest.
