Gerrie Knetemann: "There will be no mass sprint in San Sebastian"

Dutch National Coach (and former worldchampion) Gerrie Knetemann is more optimistic about the chances for Dutch riders than the last two years in Colombia and Switzerland. In the daily newspaper De Telegraaf he said: "I know for sure that we are not out of the game after 10 rounds. The parcours give us an opportunity to have some say in the final stages. It isn't an especially difficult parcours for - so won't favour the climbers too much, yet it also is not for sprinters. I think there will be no mass sprint but also no breakaway solo winner. The winner will have to be able to sprint well too. My favourites for the World Championship? Steels and Zabel. I think Cipollini and Blijlevens are too muchin the sprinter camp. Cipollini thinks he has a chance. I feel sorry that Blijlevens didn't ride the Classic San Sebastian. That would have given him a good impression of the parcours. Last December I invited him to visit the parcours in Spain; but he didn't want to go. I don't think it's intelligent to sacrifice some riders for one sprinter."

The Italian coach, Martini, agrees with Knetemann. Marc Sergeant (Belgium) talks about good chances for Tom Steels and Johan Museeuw; while Charly Mottet (France) counts on Laurent Jalabert.

Knetemann: "You can make the comparison with the worldchampionship in the Belgium Ronse; the place where Fondriest became worldchampion. Fondriest agrees with me." The Dutch coach will make his selection after the Vuelta.
