Rumours in San Sebastian about transfers

In the daily Dutch newspaper De Limburger an article appeared before the World Cup Race in San Sebastian. It seems that transfer news is more important than the race. So here are the tips. BTW, Johan Museeuw abandoned the Classic.

- Karl Zoetemelk (24 and son of former Tour winner in 1980 Joop Zoetemelk), Glenn D'Hollander (Vlaanderen 2002) and Maarten den Bakker (TVM) will go to the Rabobank-team of Jan Raas.

- Marc Madiot offers Wilfried Nelissen a great proposal for La Française des Jeux.

- Jean-Denis Vandenbroucke makes his debut with the team of his father and team leader Jean-Luc in Lotto.

- Cyrille Guimard will leave Cofidis; he can't communicate with the riders.

- The new leader of Cofidis should be Patrick Lefévere (now Mapei). And the Belgian talent Frank Vandenbroucke will follow him.

- Gabriele Colombo and Evgeny Berzin will remain with team leader Emmanuele Bombini (Batik).

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Brian Whitcomb (Cox Atlanta Velo) won a wild men’s points race, capping day two at the sixth round of the EDS Track Cup ‘97 at Alpenrose Velodrome.

Whitcomb, of Conyers, Ga., lapped the field five times to earn the victory in a race filled with riders taking laps out of the field. A total of 10 riders lapped the field at least twice on the 268-meter velodrome. Whitcomb’s teammate, John Walrod of Macungie, Pa., placed second, lapping the field four times with a total of 19 points. Chris Carlson (Team EDS), Dallas, Texas, was third.

Peter Selby (Marion Bicycle Club), Newport Beach, Calif., posted his first win of the EDS Track Cup series, defeating top seed Adam Payne (Cox Atlanta Velo), Newnan, Ga., in a men’s match sprint final which required a third ride. Selby had upset second seed Roger Farrell (Cycle Craft) of Trinidad in the semifinals.

Payne, Whitcomb and Walrod combined with teammate Ben Sharp, Indianapolis, Ind., to win the team pursuit final, catching the Olympic Club composite squad in the final. The Cox Atlanta Velo team set a new track record in qualifying earlier today.

The EDS Track Cup ‘97 concludes Sunday with five events, including the Madison and the keirin. Five track records have already been broken this weekend, with the possibility of several more, including a flying lap record attempt, which will be the final event.
