South Australian Road Championships 1996

Race Reports

A wet, cold and windy weekend greeted riders of the State roade cycling championships at Williamstown this weekend. A stronger than usual field of men rode a shortened race over the arduous 12.5km course. This proved to be an interesting race as attack after attack were made until lone rider Ben Biggs was able to stay away (margin 4sec) before a fast finishingchasing group. Former National Road Champion silver medalist Darryl Bedome made a strong comeback after 4 years break to clinch second place from race favourite Kristin Lewis.

Brilliant junior u/19 rider John Pollock rode strongly to progressively shatter the field finishing on his own 2 1/2 minutes clear of promising newcomer Jeff Florence with a further 3 1/2 minutes to road sprinter Julian Blackwell.

Matt Green proved to be too dominant in the u/17 titles following on from his recent win of the Penrith Panthers tour. Green hurt the field on the final ascent, getting away briefly only to be caught again, howver green attacked again coming in clear of the bunch. Race favourite Gene Bates never recovered from the attack to roll in behing the bunch.

The under 17 women proved again how talented young Rachael Linke and Joanne Robinson are. Clearing from the field after the first lap, Robinson and Linke Stayed together before an attack on the final lap saw Linke use her climbing ability to establish a 10 second gap from Robinson. Linke and Robinson leave tomorrow to compete at the world junior championships.

The Womens races were poorly attended although some courageous rides were seen.
