Trittico Premondiale (Italy)

The Trittico (Triptych) series is doubly misnamed this year. Only two of the three races was held, and the series is of course no longer immediately before the world championships. Nevertheless the two races produced interesting results: the first a double for two of the Casagrande brothers, the second the first pro victory for Axel Merckx. Merckx broke clear of a six-man lead group which had escaped in the last lap of 24 circuits. "I dedicate this victory to my father and equally to my sister and my mother," said Merckx. "I've had to work very hard to get this first victory."
