Report

This was 22-year-old Christophe Rinero's first pro victory, having escaped the ForceSud disaster to join La Mutuelle de Seine-et-Marne. Rinero had not raced since the French Championjships at Castre at the end of the June. Rinero says he likes "climbs but not really the big cols". So it's as well he won this stage, the easiest of what will be a very mountainous race. In particular the riders face a climb of the col du Grand-Colombier tomorrow (Thursday) after a morning 9km time trial on the slopes of the col de la Faucille.

The stage was marked by a 100km break by 12 riders: Pensec and Derame (GAN), Ravaleu (Aubervilliers), Denis Marue (Agrigel), Pillon (Mutuelle), Locatelli (Petit Casino), Thebault (La Poste), Salmon (US Creteil), Rieckewicz (Mroz), Spinozzi (Cantina Tollo), Reinvrink (Netherlands) and Fulst (Cottbus).
