FRANCE'S prime minister, Mr. Edouard Balladur, will be present at the velodrome at Roubaix to assist at the finish of the race.

THE REPUBLICAN GUARD of France, which assures the security of the course, will for the first time be mounted on all-terrain motorcycles. Last year's exceptional weather conditions dictated this change.

Race Report

Franco Ballerini (Italy) soloed to a commanding win today in Paris-Roubaix, the race also known as "The Hell of the North" and "The Queen of the Classics." Ballerini had previously finished 2nd in 1993 and 3rd in 1994. Earlier this season, he won Het Volk. Still nursing an injured shoulder, 30-year-old Ballerini made his move 30 kilometers from the finish and built a lead of almost 2 minutes by the end. Last year's winner, Andrei Tchmil (Russia), snatched second in a sprint finish, with Johan Museeuw (Belgium) rounding out the podium for third place.

"It's an unbelievable day. I won but the whole Mapei-Clas team did a great job," said Ballerini. It was an especially sweet victory for the Italian. Two years ago, he lost by inches in a sprint finish to Gilbert Duclos-Lassalle (France) and said at the time he would never compete again in "Le Fer du Nord."

"That is the sort of thing you say when you're disappointed. It's forgotten today," said Ballerini. Last year, he punctured as Tchmil launched the winning attack. This year, Duclos-Lassalle, hoping (with all Masters racers everywhere) to become the oldest winner at nearly 41, lost his bid due to a puncture.
