Compared to his 14 victories last year and his 41 wins over the past four years, this season with his new Novell team has been a disappointment. "It's always the same; you don't see me, then I'm there," Abdujaparov said via an interpreter. As for tomorrow's first mountain stage of this year's race, "Armstrong is strong and Mejia is a good climber, so the team is confident," said Motorola compatriat and race leader Andrea Peron. Novell 25:32Stage 5 Race Report Lance Armstrong, taking advantage of pre-event training, extended his Tour DuPont lead in today's race against the clock. "Certainly it helped," said Armstrong, who trained on the course for five days the week prior to the race. "I just kept doing repetitions. It's a technical course, so I knew it like the back of my hand." "It's a satisfying win because the time trial has been a weakness for me," said Armstrong. "I've lost races in time trials. But I've done a lot of work to improve. It was worth eights seconds at least today, probably more." Said Ekimov: "Three minutes is a lot." Last year, it was a 50-50 chance between Lance and me. This year there is only a small chance for me." Stage 5 - 22.9 miles - Individual Time Trial 1. Lance Armstrong, Austin, Texas, Motorola 56:32.263, 24.30 mph 2. Clark Sheehan (Montgomery-Bell), and Djamolidin Abdujaparov (eventually finishing 11th) left the field after only 12 miles into the 127-mile stage. Sheehan then soloed to victory after dropping Abdu with 9 miles to go. His break (115 miles) was the longest in the race's seven-year history. Clark moved from 27th to 22nd overall, 22:38 behind. "I knew my strength is as a climber and his is sprinting," said Sheehan. "I put my head down and never looked back. I didn't want it to come down to a sprint." "It's every cyclist's dream to win in a race like this, at least it's mine," said Sheehan. "I wasn't willing to risk too much at the end. It was hairy. I just wanted to stay upright." As for Lance and his pages (pun intended): "We just need to get through tomorrow and we'll be in good shape," said Armstrong, the race's only double stage winner. "We should be OK. My biggest concern is bad weather. Today, on the descents, you had rain, mud, slick roads. You couldn't see 100 meters in front of you." Notable DNFs: Robbie McEwen (Australia), Steve Bauer (Canada) Stage 8 - 127 miles

Armstrong left his break-away companion, Laurent Madouas (France), with 1.5 miles left to the finish to win the 120-mile Asheville to Beech Mountain stage. Armstrong had followed when Madouas jumped from a lead group of five riders with 2.5 miles to go. "When you're on top of your game, you're confident," said Armstrong. "I felt strong the whole day. I was never in trouble or in danger of being dropped." "My teammates were lions out there," Armstrong said. "I had no choice to be anything but super at the end." "Beech is special; it has all the ingredients," said Arsmtrong, who also finished second in the stage two years ago. "It's as close as we get to European climbs in this race. It's a classic."
