Tour of Berne

Amstel Gold victor Mauro Gianetti returned home in triumph to ride the Tour de Berne, but retired two-thirds of the way through the race because of the effects of the wrist injury sustained at km120 in Amstel Gold (see note below). The Florentine Luca Scinto won after breaking away 18km from the finish on the only climb on the circuit, which was covered four times.

"Towards the end of a descent, Lietti cut a corner in front of me and I ended up in the crowd. I hope I didn't injure anyone! I was whole but I felt bad. My bike was damaged, there was a long way to go still, and for a moment I contemplated abandoning there and then. But when I saw that six of my Polti team-mates were waiting to pace me back to the bunch I couldn't decently not get on with the job."
