Erik Zabel showed clearly that he had recovered from a cold that prevented him from performing at peak in the last few races. He beat in the sprint Belgian Johan Museeuw and Moldavian Andrei Tchmil which had to be happy with second and third respectively. The day's escape was done by Belgians Ludo Dierckxen and Karl Pauwels and Italian Ermanno Brignoli who reached a maximum time gap of 5 minutes and 30 seconds, only to be neutralized by Zabel's Telekom and Blijlevens' TVM.Perfectly launched by teammate Giovanni Lombardi, German Erik Zabel (Telekom) won the 85: GP de l'Escaut, raced in the province of Anversa. The winner of Milano-Sanremo, has achieved his ninth seasonal success by beating in the sprint the World Champion Museeuw and Ukrainian Tchmil. The race was characterized by a long escape (135 kms) by Belgian Ludo Dierckxens (Ssteiner Toni), who was caught up at 12 kms. from the finish. Also in the pursuit of Dierckxens Belgian Pauwels and Ermanno Brignoli (Batik-Del Monte) had taken off from the peloton. Dierckxens reached a maximum advantage of 6 minutes at km 120), before surrendering on the penultimate lap of three at the local circuit under the pursuit of Telekom and Tvm.
