Grabsch won the sprint of a group of four riders. Jens Voigt acted very clever on the ride through the Harz mountains. Short time before the last mountain top, he escaped with Jan Schaffrath (Ger/Radteam Berlin), Gerd Audehm (Ger/Nurnberger) and Ralf Grabsch (Ger/PSV Team Cologne). By reaching Konigslutter, these four had a lead of 44 seconds. The first 50 km of the stage were dominated by South African rider Andrew McLean, who escaped right after the start and was first on four of five mountain tops.
