11th Premio Mundo Ciclistico

Colombia, April 9, 1997

Report

Kelme-Telecom's Julio Cesar Aguirre took the 11th running of the Premio Mundo Ciclistico, a three day stage race, and the last major event before next Monday's start of the Vuelta a Colombia. 150 of Colombia's best riders took part in this tough event. Stage one was won by Federico Munoz, also of Kelme-Telecom, while Aguirre put his stamp on the event in the brutally tough stage from Gacheta to Ubala whose last 25 kilometers are as close to vertical as they get in professional cycling. The final stage, a 112 kilometer circuit of the capital raced at 46.5 kph, was won by the tiny Cesar Goyeneche in a sprint to the line, affirming his growing reputation as Colombia's premier sprinter. The success of Kelme-Telecom augurs well for the competitiveness of this year's Vuelta a Colombia where several strong teams will vie with favorite Raul Montana of the tiny Caprecom team.
