Rominger optimistic

Switzerland's Tony Rominger said he was optimistic he could beat the one-hour cycling world record before the end of 1997 after tests on the Bordeaux track on Saturday.

The 36-year-old Swiss tested a new bicycle and equipment for more than five hours and said : ``It went better than I expected. I've improved a lot in recent weeks.''

Rominger, who beat the record twice on this track in 1994, is to do further tests on Monday in Manchester, where Briton Chris Boardman set the present mark of 56.3759 km.

``Then we'll know which track is the fastest,'' he said.

He confirmed he would probably make a record attempt at the end of the season, after the Tour de France.

``The Tour de France remains my top priority. If I could win a stage, it would be great,'' said the Swiss, who finished second in the world's most famous race in 1993.
