Panzeri Detail

Italian cyclist Nicola Panzeri, 26, was killed on Saturday in a head-on collision between a motorcycle he was riding and an oncoming car, police said.

Panzeri, who raced for the Scrigno-Gaerne team, turned professional in February 1996 and had been due to compete in this year's Giro d'Italia, his family said.

The 18-year-old pillion rider was seriously injured in Saturday evening's accident, which happened near Panzeri's home outside the town of Lecco, northern Italy. The occupants of the car, its driver and his 12-year-old daughter, were also hurt.

Panzeri, who was not married, and his passenger were both wearing crash helmets, police said.
