Mario and Syringes

Top Italian cyclist Mario Cipollini faces possible legal action after a chambermaid allegedly pricked her finger on a syringe left in his hotel room here on the 1996 Tour of Italy.

Silvia Governatori, an examining magistrate, heard the complaint filed by the chambermaid on Tuesday and ordered a doctor to examine the contents of the syringe and to assess the woman's physical health.

The chambermaid, identified only as M.C., and her lawyer Giovanni Mati meanwhile claim that the incident, on the morning of May 29 last year, has caused her lasting psychological damage.

The rider and the rest of his Saeco Mercatone team had been staying in the Santa Cristina hotel for that day's 11th stage of the Giro d'Italia -- which sprint star Cipollini went on to win.

M.C. claimed she was cleaning out the room occupied by Cipollini when she pricked her finger on the needle of a syringe, which had been hidden amongst some papers in a waste basket.
