Day Three - EDS Track Cup, Houston Texas

Results from Day Three at the EDS Track Cup '97 at Alkek Velodrome in Houston, Texas. The next round is May 9-11 at Brian Piccolo Velodrome in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

For Immediate Release, April 13, 1997 Contact: Frank Stanley, (281) 558-5580

Two of America's top cycling stars, Marty Nothstein and Rebecca Twigg, showed why they remain the riders to beat in their respective events on the final day of the EDS Track Cup '97 at Alkek Velodrome.

Nothstein, of Trexlertown, Pa., demonstrated why he wears the rainbow jersey of a world champion as he powered to victory in the keirin, leading a top-three sweep for Team EDS. He also helped his Team EDS squad set an EDS Track Cup record in the Olympic sprint, leaving teammate Chris Carlson, Dallas, Texas, struggling to stay on Nothstein's wheel in the race. The world's number one sprinter, Nothstein won the men's match sprint Saturday.

His new teammate, Twigg, of Colorado Springs, Colo., did not disappoint, either. The six-time world champion won her specialty, the women's 3km individual pursuit, in an EDS Track Cup record-time of 4 mins, 3.318 seconds. Competing for the first time since the 1996 Olympic Games, Twigg enjoyed herself at the competition, participating in the women's match sprint and 500 meters as well. In the individual pursuit, Twigg beat Ryan Kelly (Freewheel), a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Kelly admitted she was nervous facing her hero in the final.

In other action, Nicole Reinhart (Cox Atlanta Velo), Macungie, Pa., captured the women's match sprint title in a two-ride sweep over Jennie Reed (Gregg's-Specialized), Issaquah, Wash. Reinhart, who won two events at the opening round of the EDS Track Cup '97 last month in San Diego, Calif., also finished second in the women's points race and the 500 meters. Also, 1996 U.S. Olympian Dirk Copeland, San Diego, and Danny Reid, Redlands, Calif. of the Mrs. T's-Lexus squad won the Madison, chasing down the Cox Atlanta Velo team two-thirds of the way through the race to take the win in the 30km race.
