Round 2, World Mountain Bike Cup, Men's Race

Dupouey was beaten by Australia's Cadel Evans by just 1 minute 36 seconds.

And France's Ludovic Dubau came in fourth with Canadian biker Kirk Molday in fifth place.

Riders took to the track on Mount Victoria overlooking Wellington, New Zealand's capital and hilliest city, on a sunny, warm day.

But rain fell just before the last of the six 8.6-kilometer (5.3-mile) laps and numerous cyclists tumbled and remounted on the last slippery descent before the finish line, said a race official.

First, second and third places were racing neck and neck throughout the course over tricky terrain that had cyclists negotiating sharp descents and narrow tracks overrun with tree roots.

Luttenberger out of LBL

The Austrian from the Rabobank team of Jan Raas and Theo de Rooij has an inflamed knee. The winner of the Tour of Switzerland has been advised by his doctor to take absolute rest.

Day Two at the EDS Track Cup

Adam Payne (Cox Atlanta Velo) was a double winner in the endurance events Saturday at Alkek Velodrome (Houston, Texas) during the EDS Track Cup 1997

Competing in chilly, windy conditions that have existed throughout the event, Payne, of Newnan, Ga., helped his team to victory in the 4km team pursuit over a short-handed Mrs. T's-Lexus team, then immediately went out and won the 30km points race. Payne edged British Olympian Shaun Wallace (San Diego Velodrome) by a single point, 23 to 22, in the points race. Olympian Dirk Copeland (Mrs. T's-Lexus), San Diego, Calif., was third.

In other action, Olympic and world silver medalist Marty Nothstein (Team EDS), Trexlertown, Pa., showed his stuff, beating teammate Trey Gannon in the final. In the second match of the best-of-three final, Nothstein cut underneath Gannon, using a move reminiscent of the one Nothstein used to beat Canadian Curt Harnett at the 1996 Olympic Games. Nothstein will compete in the keirin and Olympic sprint Sunday.

Also, two-time Olympic medalist Rebecca Twigg (Team EDS), Colorado Springs, Colo., moved into the semifinals of the women's sprints. Twigg, the sixth seed, beat third-seeded Dana Thomason (AMV), Del Mar, Calif., in two rides in the quarterfinals. Twigg, the 1984 national champion in the match sprint, has not competed in the event in a decade.

She will compete in that event and the women's individual pursuit during Sunday's final day of action. Finals will also take place in the Olympic sprint, Madison and keirin.
