82nd Giro d'Italia, Grand Tour

Pantani Report:

GC leader and certain winner Marco Pantani has been thrown out of the Giro d'Italia this morning before the start of Stage 21. He was tested this morning and his hematocrit level exceeded 50 per cent. The UCI are using this test as a sign that the rider may be using EPO. The race is now wide open with Ivan Gotti, Paolo Savoldelli and Laurent Jalabert all in close proximity to each other. None of them had gone close to Pantani who has won 4 stages in the mountains in this edition of the race. He has obliterated his opposition. Questions are now being asked!!

The test was performed by the medical officers of the UCI. The Jury of Commissionaires received the information before the start at 10.50 local time. Pantani was the only rider from the 9 teams tested on Saturday morning to have an excessive level.

The entire Mercatone Uno-Bianchi team withdrew from the Giro. Pantani is now suspended for 14 days and thus has time to prepare for the Tour de France. 117 riders started this morning but Paolo Savoldelli refused to start in the Maglia Rosa.

Pantani recorded a hematocrit level of 52 per cent. The Italian champion remained in his hotel at Madonna di Campiglio while the peloton began the stage - the most mountainous of the race. There was a lot of emotion surrounding the events. One Italian journalist said: "It is like a funeral." There were fans along the road seen folding up banners carrying the message to their champion "Pantani is a god". UCI President Hein Verbruggen told the press: "It is the hardest blow that cycling has had to undergo this year."

Carmine Castellano, the director of the Giro, read an official statement expressing deep regret. The statement said that "while they considered the gravity of the event the rules are designed to protect the health of the rider and they are to be respected and placed above all other considerations."

Many riders and team managers expressed their sadness. 29-year old Pantani is considered one of the all-time best climbers. His domination in this year's Giro has already raised questions. People think of the past events when great dominators were rubbed out for drugs. Like in 1978 during the Tour de France, Belgian Michel Pollentier was accused of cheating after storming up Alpe d'Huez. And the Belgian Eddy Merckx tested "positive" in Savone during the 1969 Giro after he had dominated the previous stages.

Hein Verbruggen answered several questions from the press.

What do you think of the exclusion of Marco Pantani?

"Like all the world, I think this is a catastrophe for the Giro. This is one of the most important races on the calendar and thus it has consequences for all of cycling. It is a new blow in a troubled year."

What will the UCI do now?

"We have to follow the rules. We have tested the 15 winners so far in the Giro. There was a second rider who went close to 50 per cent. All the others are well below that. It is some consolation."

Is this test doubtful?

"There are many variables that might impact on the hematocrit level. We know there are variations daily. But a reading of 52 per cent is clear. There is no discussion under the rules. I know that our limit is strict. In skiing they allow 53%. Others at the UCI have proposed 52-53% when the rule was brought in. But we received medical advice which led us to choose 50 per cent. There are no doubts with the tests, they are the rules. I think that everyone should accept the decision made today."

Does this indicate Pantani was using dope?

"You will notice I have said nothing about doping. One doesn't know what the correct facts are. The fact is that a hematocrit level of 52% was recorded. We have formed the view that this level is unhealthy for the rider. We cannot prove that EPO was used. But it is consistent with its use."

Race Report:

Italian Ivan Gotti won the grand stage of the Giro, which was designed to showcase the skills of Marco Pantani. Gotti clearly benefitted from the exclusion of Pantani and enjoyed the freedom to dominate on the steep climbs. The real action came on the Mortirolo, which followed the Tonale and the Gavia (2621 m). Gotti and Savoldelli were in the front group. Gotti attacked on the first ramps of the daunting climb which came more than 60 kms from the end. He was followed only by Simoni and Heras.

Over the top (1852m) the leading trio had a decisive lead with several other climbers struggling up the final ramps. All that was left was the descent, a false flat into Aprica and a final circuit of 20.8 kms up a final little hill.

Gotti got the group working and this assured him of success. Behind him, the champion of France Laurent Jalabert (some 2.15 down over the Mortirolo) was working with Savoldelli to regain time. They were in a small group which was 2.59 down as they went through Aprica for the first time. Then, Savoldelli, a very tough rider, attacked alone on the last small climb - the Valico di Santa Cristina and defended his second place on GC.

On the line, he was 4.05 behind the three leaders. He retained his 2nd GC place by 0.01 from Simoni who went from 7th to 3rd.

There were less spectators than expected. But they were out in numbers on the Mortirolo. At the finish in Aprica there was a demonstration by Pantani supporters but the still applauded the work of Gotti.

25-year old Heras won the stage - his first in the Giro and the second for his Kelme team after Colombian "Chepe" Gonzalez won on Monte Sirino (Stage 5).

Tomorrow, the final stage from Boario Terme to Milan over the flat plain. The 170 kms stage will, in principle, be a formality for Gotti, who should win his second Giro GC.
