Fassa Bortolo captain Fabio Baldato has won his second race of the year, the 27th edition of Trofeo Pantalica. Baldato beat Massimiliano Gentili (Acqua&Sapone) and Giuliano Figueras (Panaria) for the win, who were part of the leading group of eight riders.
As the peloton rolled out from Solarino at a steady pace, Polish Przemyslaw Niemiec (Amore e Vita) made a solo attack that was to earn him a 14'30 lead by the 60 kilometre point. That was when the chasing started, prompted by an attack from Serguei Lelekin (Cage Maglierie).
Lelekin's solo pursuit ended at Canicattini Bagni (km 95) when he was reabsorbed by the peloton. Gorazd Stangelj and Fortunato Baliani were the next to try to catch Niemiec, whose lead had started to plummet. They caught him at kilometre 125 and dropped him shortly afterwards, with the peloton following at 3'18. Saza Gajicic (Mobilvetta) was also chasing the leaders at this stage, catching them at km 147.
Tacconi Sport and Saeco had stepped up the pace in the peloton, and on the climb of Canicattini Bagni with 32 kilometres to go, they finally caught the leaders. Figueras and Gentili attacked and dropped Stangelj, causing the peloton to split into two groups.
The first group of 30 was split by more attacks on the approach to the finish, with Fassa Bortolo controlling the tempo. The final kilometre (11%) saw Baldato emerge as the strongest on the day, followed by Gentili and Figueras.
"Today I rode really well to stay with the best riders on the final climb. My legs felt heavy and I wasn't sure I could make a move against the other fast finishers...but my teammates helped me; Velo went to the front to ride hard tempo on the flats and then Bartoli led me out until the last 200 meters. He yelled at me when he pulled off; "go ! you're alone in front..."
