A very warm autumn morning greeted riders in the 2002 ACT XC Championships held by Canberra Off Road Cyclists, on Sunday 17th March. This year's race was held once again at Majura Pines with the course set similar to that of last year. The course featured a large proportion of single track, including an energy sapping single track switchback climb and some fast and furious descents. Over ninety riders came out to test themselves against the course and their fellow riders.
In the Elite Men's race notable Canberra road and mountain bike rider Brent Miller was a clear winner. Miller led from the start of the race and finished nine minutes clear of his nearest rival, David Osmond, with Ben Geier in third place. In the Expert Men's race, Tom Walter also won with a big margin ahead of Ira Cooke, who fixed a flat in the final lap. Cooke was not the only rider to be unlucky with punctures. Quite a number of riders failed to finish due to punctures and other mechanicals.
A much closer race ensued in the Elite women's category with Jindabyne rider Jane Scheer taking first place 35 seconds ahead of Julia Graczyk, with Emily Viner in third place. In the Veteran Men's race a fit and fast Paul Burbidge Smith showed the strength and speed of his recent road racing to take first place ahead of Simon Tilley, with Mark Brittle in third place. Winners in other categories included Victorian Warren Key in Masters Men, local Talent ID rider Helen Barclay in Sport Women, Bev Anderson-Tranter in Masters Women and Benjamin O'Keeffe in Sport Men.
