Ben's Day at Nerang

By Geoff Frost

Just when we thought that summer was gone, another hot, draining morning greeted the riders at Nerang on Sunday. The star of the show this week was Ben Day, who followed in the wheel tracks of McEwen and Koerts by lapping the field alone. After the initial attacks of the first 15 minutes had quietened down Day simply rode off the front of the bunch, and kept up a relentless pace for the next 40 minutes, until he was back with the lead group again.

It looked as though he was going to ride straight past and off the front again, but either he took pity on the others or they lifted their pace, because they all finished together 10 minutes later. John Cantwell put daylight between himself and the bunch to take second, with Dean McMahon third.

Promising young triathlete Paul Matthews attacked B Grade with three to go, rode to a 50 metre lead and then was able to grimly hang on to beat the fast finishing bunch, led home by U17 Peter Spencer and big Karl Rameau.

C Grade was taken out by Brett Stevens, D Grade was declared a No Race (and entry fees refunded) as they were completely mixed up with the passing A and B Grade bunches as they finished, while Robyn Francis once again showed too much speed where it counted in E Grade.

Congratulations to CATS rider Robbie McEwen on his continuing great form this season, with two stage wins in Paris-Nice.

Racing next week, Sunday March 24, is at Burleigh Worlds. Information on the Gold Coast CATS Cycling Club is available on the CATS web site at www.goldcoastcats.com
