Eastern Suburbs Summer Criterium Series, Round 11

Heffron Park, Maroubra, March 19, 2002

Following weeks of showery, unseasonal weather, summer finally seemed to arrive with a vengeance with temperatures in the 30's as another strong field of 75 riders lined up for the penultimate criterium in the 2002 Trek Criterium Series.

After dominating the closing laps over the past 3 weeks, A grade were unable to catch the lead group of B & C grades this week, despite setting a blistering pace in the opening 10 laps which saw some notable riders tailed off the back of A grade. Maybe it was case of too hard, too soon for A grade, but the night belonged to a strong B grade bunch who had rounded up a disorganised C grade with 7 laps to go.

With only 10pts separating the top 3 riders in the sprint competition and with only 1 prize (for overall winner) up for grabs, the positioning and colluding for sprint primes seemed more frantic than green jersey bonuses. Sitting in 3rd on the table and keen to grab as many points as possible before leaving for his Wagnerian Tour of Europe, Dr Bob Hampshire won the 1st prime. After that it strongman, Todd Sinclair who managed to collect 9 points on the night putting him 5 in front of Peter Carscadden with next weeks final race to determine the overall winner.

Once again it was ironman, Greg Rule who led from the front in the closing 3 laps to ensure B grade maintained their lead for overall honours. Lining up for the last lap finale, it was "I only ride twice a week" Paul Hanley who decided to take the flyer and set the bunch alight. It was then left to the master flyer, John Sunde to bring it back together again and in the process give Matt Bazzano a perfect platform for a comeback win, however as he has done twice already this year, Charlie Topfer gave everyone another lesson in power sprinting to claim his 3rd outright win and close in on Anthony Spurgeon's series lead.

Jono Davis put his recent madison form to good use to claim the A grade win, while Clive Hammerson, who must have ridden in last C grade race by now, won C grade yet again.

It's all down to next week's season finale to decide the Series leader and Sprint King. Whether you're racing or not, come along to Heffron Park next Tuesday at 6am, because it's Frank shout after the race - and that's an opportunity not to miss out on.
