A perfect night for racing welcomed another big turnout of riders for Round 10 of the Trek Summer Criterium Series. With only 3 races remaining, Anthony Spurgeon went into tonight's event with a comfortable 7 point lead over 2nd placed Charlie Topfer.
The 30km handicap, run over 15 laps on the twisting and demanding Heffron Park circuit, started off with a similar pattern to last week's race, which saw A grade get B grade in their sights with 3 laps remaining. Unlike last week though, B grade had the chance to gain maximum sprint points on the 7, 5 and 3 laps to go primes.
The early B grade pace was almost like a duel between Mr Campagnolo and Mr Shimano as Greg Rule and Matt Bazzano both showed their strong form at the front, but their thunder was stolen by Todd Sinclair who escaped at 6 to go to gain 10pts in the sprint comp to go 2nd and only 1 pt behind sprint king, Mr Mavic, Peter Carscadden..
The A graders started fast and maintained an impressive 45 km/h average for the entire race. The high tempo was helped by Easts riders Jose Rodriguez and Stewart Campbell, as well as Trek's Graeme Moffett and Brian Appleyard, Yeti's Paul Rowney and St George's Dan Smith. Importantly, there were no turns done at ridiculous speed which tend to break up the rhythm. It was clear that A grade was aiming for the overall win tonight when they caught B grade with 4 laps to go.
Only C grade remained to be caught but the relentless pace of A grade ensured that everything came together in a frantic scramble at the bell. The rest of the final lap then deteoriated to mayhem as riders from all 3 grades tried to position themselves for the sprint, but it was the power and speed of the better riders which came to the fore in the final 300m down the finishing straight.
Brian Appleyard showed he can position himself well and finish strongly as he outsprinted the always improving and consistent Jose Rodriguez (who now goes to 3rd in the Series) and the King of Heffron, Anthony Spurgeon who added another 3 points to his Series lead. Brendan Shipp and Paul Rowney claimed the minor points, while Peter Carscadden managed to stay upright and on the track to win B grade. Alan Bozunovic had a strong finish to win his 1st C grade race of the year.
It all comes to end soon with only 2 more Tuesday nights of racing left.
