Ken O'Keeffe Memorial Race

March 3, 2002

Saint Finbarr's Triton Ventilux Cycling Club runs the Ken o' Keeffe MemorialRace in memory of our deceased club member. The race in its tenth year was held on the Old Mallow Road to the New Mallow Road at the Rathduff junction back to Rathpeacon.

On the first lap eight riders broke away from the main bunch and held a lead of thirty seconds coming up to the line. This group included Ritchie Cahill (Banteer), Paddy Moriarity (Dublin Skip), Tim Barry (Cidona Carrick), Sean Lacey, Tom Hogan (Earl Of Desmond).

On the second lap Barry, Cahill and Lacey jumped on the new road and got a gap of a minute over the other five, who were still being hotly pursued by the main bunch. Coming up for the finish Cahill and Barry dislodged Lacey towards the final climb and Cahill won the sprint in a close finish. Mark Power (Cidona Carrick) won the Cat 2 event; Maurice Hartery (Antonieu CC) won the Cat 3 event, with Michael Concannon (Killorglin CC) and Noel McCarthy (Fermoy CC) taking the Junior and Veterans events respectively.

The promoting club and the O'Keeffe family would like to thank; Deputy Lord Mayor Billy Kelleher, the Gardai, Red Cross, Rathpeacon GAA Club and all the stewards and judges who officiated at the event.
