Can't see the riders for the Forrest

Thirty eight riders, over three grades, took part in the 41.5km feature race at west Dapto Sunday, March 10, 2002. As usual the race started at Huntley with the riders completing one lap to Calderwood road and one lap to Marshall Mount hall.

There was king of the mountain time deductions available at Hooker hill and Marshall Mount and sprint deductions at Yallah TAFE and Huntley. A separate KOM competition was also run in conjunction with the overall race.

The event was sponsored by Caesar's at Corrimal, Wollongong Discount Bikes, Spearman's Cycles and Garry Doughty builder.

The A grade bunch stayed together for the entire race distance but Paul Forrest put his stamp of authority on the event by taking four of the six KOM sprints and gaining the highest number of sprint deductions also. This gave him the overall win and the KOM competition.

The minor placings in the sprints and KOMs were evenly spread amongst the other riders. Hardy Lohse rode well to take out second place and Dylan Forbes was third on a count back from Mark Wall. Wall had crossed the line first in an very good sprint from Forrest.

B grade also had it's stand out rider in Rodney Harding. He displayed his mountain bike climbing ability by claiming the KOM competition and even though had to take the back seat to the more experienced road riders in the sprints he had enough time deductions to also take the overall win.

Tony Pulo showed that he is coming back into form with some strong sprinting displays that enabled him to be second overall. Jeff Gray took out two of the four sprints on offer at Yallah TAFE which was just enough for third place overall.

Possibly the stand out ride on the day was by Dave Morris in C grade. Morris used the climb up the steep side of Marshall Mount hill to catapult himself off the front of the bunch. Even though the rest of the bunch was chasing hard Morris was able to stay away for the next 27km and take out maximum points at all the sprint points and KOMs.

It was a decisive win for Morris and a gutsy effort that saw him win the KOM competition and the overall.

Paul Kaye was the best of the rest showing that he can climb as well as sprint to be second overall with Terry Welsh a deserving third after dominating the sprints.

Next week's race is a 27.5km scratch race which will be followed by the Club 's presentations.

The group of Club riders raising money for CANTEEN by riding from Adelaide to Wollongong will be arriving in the Mall next Saturday around noon. Any Club members who wish to ride with them on the last stage into Wollongong can meet them at the bottom of Macquarie Pass at about 10.15am. A group of riders will leave opposite the Unanderra pool at 8.45am to ride out and meet them. Members are encouraged to come out if possible in Club clothing.
