Carnegie Caulfield Criterium

AFL Park, Mulgrave, March 5, 2002

More good fields on a hot Melbourne night, and a great result for one of the more experienced Club members, who prefers not to be type cast by his Masters license! The reports for the next 3 Tuesdays may be a little brief as your reporter is learning the first aid ropes courtesy of St Johns, and is relying on the notes from the handicapper to bring you the latest news. Make sure if you're going to attack it's in sight of the start finish area to be sure of seeing your name in print!

A Grade as usual saw the pick of the action, with small groups trying desperately to go clear in the company of Robert Tighello (ACR). The first to succeed saw the lanky superstar joined by Thaddeus Roos (Bicycle Superstore), Leigh De Luca, Daniel Nelms (ProMotion Cycles), Grant "The Bricky" Matthews, Ray Turner (Repco/Park Tools/Diamond Back) Brad Edmunds and Matt Goold (ACR). This group went clear 24 minutes in, and stayed away for 10 minutes before the chase reeled them in.

Tighello's next move saw Edmunds and Goold still fresh enough to follow, along with Dennis Bowen-Day (Grand Prix Cycles) and Guy Green, and the 5 riders powered along for another 10 minutes before a brief regrouping of the field.

The winning move came with 15 minutes remaining, with Edmunds joining Tighello in a pairs time trial to the finish, where Tighello outsprinted his younger rival. Crowd favorite Doug Garley (Terry Hammond Cycles) jumped away from the bunch in the last lap to claim 3rd place, and showed old habits die hard by checking the gap to the bunch, before straightening his jersey and saluting the spectators like the old Euro Pro he is. Roos lead the rest home, from De Luca and Turner.

Not a lot of noteworthy action apparently in the other races, as the hot weather, hot pace and big fields made sure that any attacks were quickly contained. The B Grade win went to (the straight back to A Grade!) Glenn Hutchinson, from Chris D'Amelio, Hutchy's lead out man Mark Gallagher and Paul Howard. Louisa Hamilton-White (SBR) took the money as best unplaced woman and continued to impress with her improvement and strength.

Under 17 up and comer Nathan Wise has earned promotion to B Grade and taken his revenge for missing the early break on Sunday, with a comfortable sprint win in C grade ahead of Martin Peeters, Hayden Marcollo and Ben Willey, with Rachel Rademaker the best of the girls.

The first 3 place getters in D Grade will all test themselves in C Grade next week, with the night's win going to Jason Jones, from Jason Gelsi, Richard Cormick and the veteran Bob Johnstone. New VIS member Apryl Eppinger was fastest of the girls, and is also not far from moving up to C Grade.
