Davis caps off good week

The world's biggest cycle ride, Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour with more than 40 000 riders, also has racing classes. A group of six riders fought it out in the men's race. Mapei's German Patrick Sinkiewitz made a late attack that the only South African, David George, countered on. George was caught in turn just a few metres before the line by Australian Alan Davis (Mapei), winner of the points jersey in the Giro del Capo.

In the women's class Ronel Liss of Stellenbosch crossed the line first, which was a mystery to the other top contenders who hadn't observed her at all along the road. The race is run in groups however, which makes it a bit harder to see who is who along the road. But since one of the timing mats along the road hadn't recorded Liss' passage she was not included in the results list.

The race jury also consulted video tapes of the race. Liss said that she started in the back of the C group containing all women elite riders. She has lived in Germany and trained there and has only entered some fun rides in South Africa before.
