Two from two for Baldato

Fassa Bortolo's captain Fabio Baldato performed the double when he won the Trofeo Arancia Rossa, the second of the three Sicilian races. Baldato was the quickest of the 100 riders that contested the bunch sprint in Scordia, beating home Mario Manzoni (Alexia) and Mykhaylo Khalilov (Colombia-Selle Italia) in a time of 4:15.11.

The 180 kilometre race started in Ramacca with all riders taking part save for Cavagnis, Wegelius and Gronqvist. The first part saw attacks by Claudio Astolfi, Gobbi, Giordani and then a group with Tiralongo, Gronqvist and Scarponi. All of these were neutralised, and the average speed for the first hour was 40.1 km/h.

The pace picked up after that an the peloton was strong out single file, with constant attacks still the order of the day. The bunch reached Scordia (km 108) for the first of four 17.5 kilometre laps, with no-one managing to get clear. Astolfi tried again with Gajicic on the second lap, but they were caught with 6 km to go on the same lap. 4 kilometres later, and Astolfi was at it again, building a 25 second lead as he crossed the line in Scordia with two laps (35 km) to go. The Acqua e Sapone rider was chased by the Tacconi Sport team, who caught him three kilometres later.

Caucchioli, Petito and Ferrari were next to attack, but were caught through the efforts of Cage Maglierie and De Nardi-Pasta Montegrappa. The last lap saw the bunch all together again, with Landbouwkrediet-Colnago taking over the pace making. Curiously the sprinters' teams did not get organised to lead out their respective men in any sort of a train, and the finish was quite chaotic.

Fassa Bortolo did manage to get it together in time to lead out Baldato for his second sprint win in two days, and his third win of the year.

"On Saturday I rode really well to stay with the best riders on the final climb," said a happy Baldato after. "My legs felt heavy and I wasn't sure I could make a move against the other fast finishers...but my teammates helped me; Velo went to the front to ride hard tempo on the flats and then Bartoli led me out until the last 200 meters. He yelled at me when he pulled off; "go ! you're alone in front..."

The third and final race in the Sicilian series is the Trofeo dell'Etna on Tuesday, March 12.
