Stage 7 - January 6: Petone Criterium

Report

From Start to Finish it's all Reid.

Robin Reed became the first man to lead the Tour of Wellington from start to finish when he held off Hayden Roulston by a comfortable 2min 35s margin.

Reid, who hadn't previously won a road race made the Tour's decisive break during the first stage, in very windy conditions. Reid escaped with three other riders on the second of the criterium's 25 laps, and the quartet rapidly built up a decisive lead, lapping the field three laps from the finish.

In the final four-man sprint, Reid just edged out team-mate Bryce Shapley. Their Avanti team-mates had controlled the bunch behind them, allowing their escape and preventing the traditional bunch sprint for the Hutt stage.

"I'm really rapt with the win," Reid said. "There was some good strong work from the guys in the break and the other guys behind to make sure we kept our advantage."

From this point Reid's lead in the Tour was never really threatened, however he did have a couple of scares.

Hayden Roulston (Trust House - New Zealand) gave it his best to catch Reid, particularly during the fifth stage. Roulston looked certain to take the yellow jersey after Roulston bridged a gap to teammate Shane Melrose and the pair put some serious time on the pack. However Hong Kong rider Wong Kam Po saved Reid. Kam Po managed to pull the pack back onto Rouslon's breakaway.

"Kam Po was incredibly strong," said a relieved Reid. "I was a little bit worried when Hayden got away. He put a bit of pressure on me going up the Wallaceville hill on that lap and only Bryce could go with him."

When Reid and Roulston crossed the line together after the fifth stage, the overall race was over bar the shouting.
