Damian Sends Omen To Competitors

The Sunday morning criterium, January 27, conducted by the Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club was, to say the least, a disappointing affair. A small field lined up and even fewer finished. Between punctures and single bike accidents, it very much became a last man standing affair.

Fortunately, the falls did not lead to serious injury, however, Michael Vaughan's rear derailleur had seen better days and Kevin Tankard's new Banesto team knicks would not have looked out of place at a Cher concert. Unfortunately, Kevin was unable to "turn back time" and the fall that occurred in the final corner, dashed his chances for yet another victory. In typical Tankard fashion, he was able to pick himself up and remount before the pack was able to catch him and secure second place.

On a brighter note, Tuesday, January 29's, eight-kilometre Individual Time Trial was a much more positive affair. Many of the usual suspects had returned from family holidays to take part. Once again the Personal Best scoring system was implemented, with only four riders creating new zeniths.

Damian Wells is making a habit of slicing big chunks of his personal best times and club members are starting to wonder when his times will start to plateau. Taking 39 seconds off an eight kilometre personal best is substantial, it certainly earned Damian the ride of the night.

Both Wells and Harvey Dwyer rode themselves into the sub-twelve minute category for the first time. These rides may well earn them a place in the scratch-markers bunch for this week-ends Road Race at Fifth Street, Merbein on Sunday. Others to score maximum points were Rob McNally and Reece Homfray.

Cyclists can now set themselves for two road races, the event at Merbein is scheduled to be a 45-kilometre handicap while next Tuesday is a 40-kilometre graded scratch race.
