Wollongong's answer to the Tour de France and the Tour Down Under was held last Sunday, the Tour de Huntley.
Unlike its namesakes our race is not a teams race but an individuals race. It consists of a 4km time trial, 9km pointscore and an 18km scratch race. Thirty three riders took part spread over three grades.
Danny Hennessy kicked off his quest for the overall win with a scintillating time trial taking 5 seconds off his personal best time in recording 5:41:59. Luke Dale was the next best in 5:43:59 with Adam Rourke foreshadowing things to come recording the third fastest time of 5:46:61.
Rourke was consistent throughout the pointscore race and edged Hennessy out by a single point for first place. Mark Walters was third with Graham Rutter one point behind in fourth.
With the overall win hanging on the scratch race result it was Hennessy who showed the bunch a clean pair of wheels crossing the line several lengths in front of the bunch. Rourke was unable to get over the top of Walters for second place and had to be content with third.
The overall win went to Hennessy from Rourke and Peter Jones. Hennessy was pleased with the result as he is still in the early stages of his training for the up coming road season.
Tony Pulo pulled out all the stops in the time trial and came up with the fastest time in B grade of 6:20:05, unfortunately he was a little low on the reserves for the next two stages. Gerard Donaldson was second and Mark Davis third.
Davis was the stand out in the pointscore recording the highest points at each of the three sprint lines. Joe Pereira picked up points at each sprint and was second with Donaldson third.
Going into the scratch race Davis was one point infront of Donaldson. In a very good sprint Donaldson held off Davis for the win with Adrian Cooper third.
That left Donaldson and Davis tied on 27 points, but as Donaldson had won the scratch race he was given the overall win, Davis second and Pereira third.
Joe Chiaverini won the C grade time trial in 6:46:29 from Sally Watts with Dave Morris third.
The first four sprints in the pointscore were very even with every rider collecting points. Morris and Watts attacked and were able to get to the final sprint over 10 seconds infront of the bunch therefore collecting bonus points. The pointscore results were Morris from Watts and Wayne Farrugia.
Going into the scratch race Watts was equal with Morris on points and Chiaverini was only one point behind. The whole of the bunch were up for the sprint which Chiaverini led out, he was never really challenged for the lead and crossed the line in first place. With meters to go it looked like Farrugia was going to take out second place but Watts lunged at him and pipped him by a tyres width.
That left Chiaverini and Watts tied on 21 points in the overall competition but as in B grade the count back gave the winner of the scratch race the overall win. So it was Chiaverini from Watts and Morris.
Next week's races are criteriums at Warilla. Due to most of the Club committee being involved in a fundraising bowls day at Woonona Bowling Club for the riders participating in the ride from Adelaide to Wollongong for Canteen there will be no morning tea or canteen facilities at the race.
