Eastern Suburbs Summer Criterium Series - Round 4

January29, 2002

After a fantastic day of racing for the Joseph Sunde Memorial yesterday (see story) when over 170 riders lined up to race, Round Four of the Trek Eastern Suburbs Summer Criterium Series still managed to entice back over 90 riders to line up for the Tuesday night, January 29, 15 lap, 30km group handicap.

The visting Korean cyclists raced again and are slowly getting used to the demanding nature of the circuit, even if their tatics and skills are not always to everybodys liking. C grade once again had a strong field of 30 riders and looked like they might have the race to themselves, however Sutherland strongman, Geoff Butler changed things when he decided to go from the gun.

All of a sudden, 43 B grade riders were scrambling for wheels and by the third lap, a solid group of 12 riders had ridden away from the main B grade group. This move proved decisive as it gave the front group the opportunity to pick up valuable sprint points on the 7, 5 and 3 to go sprint primes for the Sprint King competition.

It all came to end with three to go though when the A grade train came storming to the front, mainly to try and complete the race before the threatening storm clouds opened up.

C grade were finally caught on the last lap, just as the storm clouds did open up and all of a sudden the three remaining corners became a different proposition to negotiate at 50kph. In the mayhem and confusion, former Scots College rower, Dave 'Moose' Stewart decided to go for it and held off a fast finishing Anthony Spurgeon, who now heads the pointscore by a clear eight points.

Peter Carscadden made up for his earlier error when he missed the B grade break to take first B grade and Sutherland team mate, Paul Duncan backed up a fine ride from Monday to claim 1st C grade.
