136 riders turned out to race at the second race of the Canberra Off Road Cyclists 2002 Summer XC Series. This is a record for participation at a CORC club cross country race. Amongst the starters was World Cup/NORBA Mountain Biker Mary Grigson who elected to race in the longer Senior Men's category for some training.
Race conditions were a little on the hot side with temperatures in the low thirties. The shade of Ingledene Pines provided some comfort and respite from the heat for the riders.
The course was run in the reverse direction to the direction that it is often run at Ingledene. This course was definitely popular with the riders, featuring loads of fast flowing single track, and numerous tight and slippery corners.
In the Senior men's race Shane Paton had a comfortable win, from mountain runner David Osmond, who was feeling fit after participating in Thredbo's Runners Week. Paul Burbidge Smith was third. The women's race was won by Julia Graczyk, after riding with Allison Jones for the first two laps. Jones flatted half way through the third lap. Emily Viner was second, with Trish Garrett third.
A large field in Sport A Men made for some exciting and close racing, with Martin Mullin winning, new dad Richard Bontjer in second place, and Gary Scheld in third place. In the Master's Men race only a second separated Paul Lees and Paul Rowher with John Graydon thirty seconds back in third place.
