Randwick Botany CC

Local cycling club trains in Snowy Mountains

By Tony Horneman

Ten Randwick Botany junior cyclists and triathletes and 25 senior riders headed to Jindabyne for a week of training in the Snowy Mountains. Club Captain Mark Robertson said the riders aimed to improve their fitness and cycling skills in the clean mountain air and challenging hills. "It has taken a day or two to acclimatize to the higher altitude. It is good training for the upcoming road racing season" Mark added.

In local club racing at Heffron Park on Saturday 19 January 2002, A and B Grade competed in a 32km handicap race where the six B Graders were given a 2 minute start over the 6-rider A Grade bunch. By the half way mark, A Grade had made up 1 minute and had B Grade in sight. With 10km to go, Stewart Campbell and Dave Stewart broke away from the A Grade group and caught and passed the B grade riders. Campbell and Stewart worked together until the final sprint where Campbell lunged at the line to win by centimetres. Todd Sinclair won the bunch sprint to claim third place with B Grader Aaron Castles finishing fourth.

The 16-rider C Grade race was conducted over 30km and was won by Craig Dempsey in time of 52min 15sec. Second place went to Tony Caruana with Andrew Best third.

Scott Rice lined up for his first race in D Grade over 20km. Rice stayed with the bunch until the final lap when Greg Smith sprinted home to claim first place with a time of 38min 30sec. Peter Davison was second and Ron Sproule third. Julie Howard finished strongly in fourth place. E Grade placings after 14km was Luke Davison first, in a time of 38min 0sec, Norman Jew second and Julia Guinan third.

Junior numbers were down due to Snowy Mountains training. Three juniors lined up for a 2km Time Trail, which was won by Thom Richards in a time of 4min 37sec. Adriano Maradini, 4min 40sec and James Warne, 5min 3sec. The three riders finished in the same order after the 6km Junior Scratch Race.

There will be no Randwick Botany Cycling Club racing on Saturday 26 January due to the public holiday. Racing will resume on Saturday 2 February 2002 at Heffron Park, Maroubra NSW. Juniors start at 1.30pm and Seniors 2.30pm. For more information please contact the club secretary Helen Vella on 02 9667 3307 or website www.randwickbotanycc.com.
