Italian Silvio Martinello and German Rolf Aldag have finished on top of the classification in the Six Days of Berlin after the final night. The experienced pair beat Matthew Gilmore/Scott McGrory by 17 points, Robert Bartko/Andreas Beikirch by 39 points and Bruno Risi/Kurt Betschart by 116 points. All four teams finished on the same lap.
Martinello/Aldag were leading by a lap with one night to go, but succumbed to the pressure from the other teams early on the last night, and lost the lap. In the final madison of the evening, the Großen Schultheiss-Finaljagd, the four teams (as well as Adriano Baffi/Marco Villa) fought it out for supremacy. Gilmore/McGrory did not concentrate on gaining points, and repeatedly tried to take a lap, but were chased down each time by the other teams.
In the end, this tactic did not work as they only gained 30 points over the final night, compared with Martinello/Aldag's 70 points. That was more than enough to give Martinello/Aldag the overall win. Third placed Bartko/Beikirch also rode a strong race, but could not overcome the experienced pairs in front of them.
39 year old Martinello has only ridden the Berlin Six four times in his career, but has won it on every occasion. An impressive track record!
