Stage 10 - February 10: Kuala Lumpur (Criterium), 6.3km x 12 laps
Brown grabs his second; overall honours to MunozBy Tommy Campbell in Kuala Lumpur The final criterium in Kuala Lumpur ended in a bunch sprint, with Australian Graeme Brown (Panaria) taking his second stage win of the tour in front of Daniele Galli (Index-Alexia) and the irrepressible Robert Hunter (Mapei). The stage around the streets of KL was over six laps of a 12.6 kilometre circuit. It was fast and furious with the race leader's team Colombia Selle-Italia marshalling and controlling the ebb and tide of the race. There were a number of brief forays from the peloton, but they were all nullified in the interests of the principals in the various jerseys, yellow (Munoz), points (Hunter) and the polka dot (Marin) plus of course the Asian leader (Susanto). As anticipated it came down to a hectic bunch sprint with Brown taking the honours in a photo finish from Daniele Galli. The race leader Hernan Dario Munoz acknowledged his delight at his biggest success of his career by finishing in the main group in 30th position. It was fitting that the Colombian ambassador was on hand to offer his congratulations, so we can all presume the party has started in earnest. Unquestionably, Munoz bided his time in the 10 day event held over 1,300 kilometres of intense competition held in the abnormal heat, which even took its toll on the Malaysians at this time of year.
From day one last Friday week, when Munoz posted a very creditable time of 26 minutes and 20 seconds in Putrajaya, he was on the lips of many as a potential winner, despite the fact that he had never had a major success in an event such as LTDL. His standing out of the 151 starters was ninth behind the South African Robert Hunter, who virtually took the race right to the wire before being cruelly relieved of his yellow jersey on the road to the Genting Highlands yesterday. It was a stage of epic proportions which not only showed guts and determination, but won kudos from the spectators both on the road and those who were fortunate to watch the race live on television. On days two and three, Munoz continued in ninth place overall but lost a number of seconds to Hunter who was picking up bonus seconds from his superior (three wins and a number of top ten placings) stage placings. The stage from Tapah to Bentong last Monday, which included the climb up to Frasers Gap, showed that the Colombian was moving ever so sweetly up the leader board. He finished in a group of 15 that stole valuable time on the main pack, and had now installed himself at number 2 on the classification behind Hunter, who by now was being touted as the overall winner by the pundits. To be fair to the South African, he knew that the Colombian was the joker in the pack.
On a relatively flat stage to the historic town of Melaka on Tuesday, it can only be said that the leaderboard got a real spring cleaning when 32 riders gained a massive 15 minutes. The race was now up front for those fortunate to bank so much time on the peloton, who virtually threw in the towel midway through the 130 kilometres of competition on that day. Still there was no change in the standings but Hunter was adding the bonus seconds to his lead. On Tuesday into Johor Bahru for the final sprint to the line there was minor consternation when there was a crash before the last corner, but the Colombian and the other principals kept out of trouble and continued playing their waiting game. The peloton by now had been reduced to 136 because of disqualifications, outside the time limit and those who failed to stick the pace due to illness. The next two days belonged to the sprinters who were intent on salvaging something because of the impending tortuous pimple up to Genting. Still Hunter led from the front, and at each press conference after the day's racing he was still uttering the name of Munoz who was his chief threat.
The Mapei team tried exceptionally hard on the stage from Kluang to Tampin last Thursday, which was the longest stage of Le Tour to soften up the Selle Italia outfit. It was a day of constant movement off the front of the peloton with the Mapei boys endeavouring to loosen up the rivals, with Munoz top of their shopping list. Nut in the end it ended with Munoz making the cut along with Fortunato Baliani after the bunch split into two decisive groups. The biggest losers over that 196 kilometre stage were the iTeam Nova.com boys Alan Iacuone (Aus) and Dominique Perras (Can) who missed the cut and went from being very much in contention at fifth and eighth on general classification respectively, slipped off the pace. From then on, the writing was on the wall for Hunter, who knew to all intents and purpose that the showdown would now be on the slopes of Genting. Unfortunately for him, it proved to be his Achilles heel. As Munoz did the damage on the climb, Hunter saw his lead slip away, but still managed to hold onto second overall with a fighting ride. He and his Mapei-Quick Step team had to be content with the points jersey and the team prize, which will certainly help in their quest to regain the number one team spot on the UCI rankings this year. Now it remains to be seen if the Union Cycliste Internationale will increase the status of the Tour de Langkawi to a 2.2.
