Markouris hatrick at lakeside drive

A Grade

Dennis Markouris (Giromondo Cycles) made it a hatrick of victories in A Grade by taking out last night's criterium at Lakeside Drive.

The bunch, noting that Markouris had a lightning fast finish, seemed content to roll around for the duration of the race with only the odd attack being launched but all attacks failed. Markouris led the bunch home up the final straight with Jake Sunderland (Lygon Cycles), who fancied his chances of overturning Markouris' run of victories after winning at Kew the previous night, on his wheel. The young Brunswick rider appeared to pass Markouris, put the counter punch saw Sunderland finish second, with Ken Allen again showing his consistency crossing in third place. With Markouris not eligible for the upcoming Northern Combine Criterium Championships on Thursday 14 March, Sunderland has become favourite for the event.

B Grade

Glen Moonen took out an exciting B Grade race. With the support of his Sunbury-Hume team mate John Lehner the duo took control of the race, not allowing the attacks of Muzzie Akgun (CoburgCycling.com) or Adrian Vizzari (Dirt Riders) to gain any initiative. Conrad Exton made several attempts to break away putting in huge turns of pace at the front, causing several riders to believe he should have been in A Grade.

The bunch was led out in the home straight by the fast finishing Laurie Noonen (Brunswick). Moonen however took the lead with about 20 meters to go with a late surge of speed. Akgun left his run too late and coming from about 9th wheel managed to overtake Vizzari for second place. Moonen, in training for the upcoming Sunbury Fair Criterium was extremely happy with his first victory on the circuit.

C Grade

C Grade featured attacks all evening. None where successful until Dale Weston (Dirt Riders) launched with about 5 minutes to go. He quickly powered away from the bunch, who where lead by the Sunbury pair of John Marcan and Chris Hitchen and CoburgCycling.com's Teck Chin and Paul Bunn.

Weston managed to hold his lead to win by over 200 metres with the minor placings going to Jordan Sutherland (Brunswick) equalling his older brother Jake's second place in A grade. Matt Farrell in took out the minor placing.
