Oaks Rd Twilight Race

Carrick, Tasmania, February 18, 2002

As usual it was a hard windy night on the farming plains of Carrick. The A grade bunch was made up of eight strong men including Evandale internationalist and criterium specialist Sean Sullivan, Sun Tour rider Karl Menzies, and Australian representatives Caleb Manion and Bernard Sulzberger (this ride being the one of the last major hitouts before the Tour of Tasmania). The bunch headed off to Bracknell at a cracking pace with a big tail wind giving them a push along the way. At Bracknell the bunch was down to seven riders, facing a massive head wind home. On the way back the bunch stayed together, despite numerous attacks by Sean Sullivan. In the sprint Karl Menzies was to good for Sean, while Bernard Sulzberger and Kharne Hammersley battled out for third and fourth places.

The B grade bunch was made up of a larger field of 16 riders. Juniors Matt Goss and Wes Sulzberger were going through strong leaving many senior riders in their wake. These two young chargers are coming into good form in readiness for the track nationals in Alice Springs later on in the year. By the end of the night the bunch was down to seven, with Matt Goss taking out the sprint from Wes Sulzberger and Josh Wilson.
