The weekend saw an amazing change of weather that changed the nature of the Blue Range MTB DH course from a fast packed technical downhill into a course with rivers flowing along the track.
120 riders contested the MTBA National DH Series, the second for the 2002 season.
The Elite Men qualifying runs produced some blistering times, with local rider Jarod Rando the quickest followed by Mathew Tape and Ben Cory.
Race times in the U19 Mens qualifying runs times were inconsistent, a problem tracked to a faulty start gate, and they were scrapped and all U19 Men were run again at the end of the day.
Heavy rain, which had threatened all morning finally came and with it some pretty miserable conditions for the riders waiting for their start. Race times started to increase, eventually slowed, but the rain was enough to change the nature of the course considerably.
The final runs for Elite Men produced times about 50 secs slower than the morning qualifying times with Rando, Tape and Cory holding onto their 1st to 3rd positions respectively.
U19 rider Justin Havukainen produced a blistering time that would have placed him 9th in Elite.
The final round of the MTBA DH series will be held in conjunction with the MTBA National Championships on February 17 at Mt. Beauty.
