Another large field of cyclists made the journey out to Blue Range to contest Race 3 of the summer
series. And like Race 2, which featured Olympian Mary Grigson, there was some class in this field.
Two riders with international experience, Brent Miller and Dylan Cooper, made their return to club mountain bike racing as they joined the field in the Senior Men's category. Several years ago, Dylan and Brent were two of Australia's leading mountain bikers, Dylan in the open category while Brent was in the juniors back then.
It was great to see them both back on the mountain bikes again, as Dylan has been kept away from the sport through sickness, while Brent has spent more time on the road bike in recent years.
While the course was over a slightly easier course than that used for the National standard events in the same area, it was still demanding in many sections. The new tracks contained many momentum sapping bumps, which didn't leave too many places to have a rest. And the many exposed tree roots, left slightly damp after the overnight rain, brought down many a rider.
But Brent and Dylan did not seem greatly affected by this, or, particularly in Dylan's case, by their prolonged absence from mountain bike racing. They managed to break away from Shane Paton, who has won the first two races in this summer series, after one lap of the six lap race. Brent managed to hold off a charging Dylan on lap three, and then pulled ahead over the last few laps to win by just over a minute.
Meanwhile, in the Senior Women category, Jane Scheer rode particularly strongly as she cleared out from her competitors in the first lap, and went on to record a strong victory over one of Australia's leading female orienteers, Emily Viner.
