Ncca National Track Cycling Championships

The 2001 Collegiate National Track Cycling Championships held at the famous Major Taylor Velodrome in Indianapolis, IN, proved to be a showcase of local Lehigh Valley talent. In the 1km time trial, Penn State rider and Mertztown resident Bobby Lea blazed to a time of 1.07 to take the win, right behind him in second place was Parkland High School graduate now riding for Dartmouth, Todd Yezefski.

Lea, a 2001 Junior Worlds Team member and two time Junior National Champion in the 3km pursuit, then stole a win in the 3km pursuit from his Penn State teammate Mike Friedman in the last half lap of the event.

Next on the schedule, Penn State's squad sped their way to qualify first in the team pursuit and followed that up with riders Bobby Lea, Mike Friedman, Jake Burns, Jon Frederick, and Chaim Letwin taking the win and the coveted National Championship. The 30km Points Race followed, where David Wenger took first place, chased to the line by Friedman and Lea, taking second and third place respectively.

The Sprint event saw Yezefski smoke his way to the National Championship final where he narrowly took the victory over Penn State rider Jon Frederick and Wisconsin rider Eric Degolier. In the Italian Pursuit, Team Penn State lost by less than a second to Marian College's powerhouse team to take second place.

Bobby Lea brought home the biggest prize of the week, the Men's Omnium. Second place went to Todd Yezefski and third place went to Mike Friedman making it a 1-2-3 sweep in the Men's Omnium for Lehigh Valley Velodrome riders. Finishing off the week, Marian College placed first overall, with Penn State in second and University of Florida in third place.
