Courtesy of Jeremy Dixon Platte Bridge Station Stage RaceCasper Wyoming, September 1- 3 2001by Nathan Busch Turbulent crosswinds, wide-open roads, and a difficult climbing time trial awaited racers as they began the first of four stages Saturday morning. In the pro 1-2 men's first stage, a rolling, windy, 90-mile out and back course, the pace started off fast from the gun. An early breakaway formed in a heavy side-wind and stayed away for 15 miles. As this first break was caught on a long uphill tailwind section of road, two riders, Trek-Volkswagen's Travis Brown, and Rio Grande/Monsoon's Andy Clark counter-attacked. This duo quickly built up a 3-minute lead. They continued to hold this lead for the next 55 miles. With 25 miles left in the race, Credit Agricole's Jonathan Vaughters moved to the front of the main group and began reel the break away back in. With 15 miles left, the break had been caught, and a new group of 7 was off the front. This group, which included Oliver Beckingsale of the British Pro World Mountain Bike Team, worked together efficiently until the last 5km. At the finish, following a series of viscous attacks and counter-attacks, it was Rio Grande/Monsoon Racing rider Nate Busch coming in 6 seconds ahead of the other 6. The rest of the field - what was left of it- came in 6 minutes later. The following morning, the riders partook in a 10 km uphill time trial. Jonathan Vaughters, who had finished in the main field the day before, won the stage decisively by beating Oliver Beckingsale by over a minute and a half. Race leader Nate Busch rode the last half of the time-trial on a flat rear tire and lost considerable time to Beckingsdale. Beckingsdale became the new race leader, with Fort Collins Cycling and Racing rider Evan Ruzanski in 2nd, and GS Velonews rider Kevin Nicol in 3rd. That afternoon, the racers competed in a 60-minute timed criterium. The course was flat, but had poorly-conditioned pavement and two 130 degree turns for added fun. With so many riders so closely placed togethor in the over-all standings, no break aways managed to stay away. At the end of the race, Fort Collins Cycling and Racing rider Mark Southard launched a 1km attack to win the race. The final stage was a 70-mile out and back road race that covered terrain that was very similar to that of the first day's race. An early break away consisting of Mark Southard, John Osguthorpe, and Vitamin Cottage rider Joey Pinkerton succeeded in staying away the entire race and changing the overall standings. Near the end of the stage, Southard rode away from the other two and won his second stage. The main field - consisting of nearly everyone who started the race and was not in the break away - finished about 5 minutes later.
