Amazing what our near neighbours (Great Britain) achieved at the Olympics in Sydney. If they can do it why not us! It is only a few months ago that Paddy Doran muted the idea and like a brush fire it has swept all along before it to get the item up to the top of the agenda. Anybody wandering into the Park Saturday, September 1, would have been forgiven if they thought they were at an outdoor concert. Music was stifling the air and the DJ was playing up-tempo music and interspersing it with "and now Will Byrne the co-ordinator of the champs is on the start line. Oh dear were the roving mike, why is Will going to let us into his lungs. Some man our Will." The area was also like a tented village, which certainly would put some sporting events to shame. Lads and lassies you are on a winner, well done. Track cycling was back with a bang at national competition level. It was on the menu over the weekend. The setting was the Eamonn Ceannt Stadium in Crumlin, Dublin. In the last number of months a number of strong and determined individuals got together to infuse interest in the track. By all accounts Saturday's turnout justified their optimism with entrants from all over the country. The supreme champion of the championships was Paul Healion, a member of the Usher Irish Road Club, who won two titles as well as gaining podium positions in other events. As competitors departed the scene the general talk was "the wind is at our backs. Keep going."
