Indonesia makes an amazing
comeback
By Rajvinder Singh, Singapore
The Southeast Asian Games recently concluded concluded in Malaysia.
For those countries in the region, these games are the mini Olympics,
second only to the Asian Games in importance and prestige. As such,
the cycling events are very important for all Asean nations, and competition
is always very stiff and intense.
This year's games are a suprise to the traditional powerhouses of
Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines. Indonesia made an amazing comeback
after all its internal turmoils, to win 11 out of 17 Gold medals, most
in the track and time trial.
Vietnam was the suprise of the games, with wins in the women's cross
country and time trials. Not bad for a country considered an outsider
and relatively new to the sport. Of course, Southeast Asian cycling
is not comparable to European or Australian standards, but the racing
is just as competitive, popular and on its way to international standards.
Malaysia hosts the Tour of Langkawi, and has two of the world's best
velodromes in Kuala Lumpur and Ipoh.
Indonesia has always had a rich road racing heritage, with a few cyclists
racing in Holland over the years. Thailand cycling has great support
and coverage, and most of the riders are employed full time by the armed
forces (they are promoted each time they get an important victory!).
Some of the region's cyclists have also participated in the Olympics,
World Championships and World Cup events.
