58th Tour of Poland - 2.3Poland, September 3-9, 2001Main Page Results Previous stage Stage 6 - September 8: Piechowice - Karpacz, 128 km (reduced from 150 km)Voigt wins key stageBy Daniel Marszalek, cyclingnews.com correspondent Jens Voigt (Credit Agricole) moved himself into the lead of the Tour of Poland, by winning the sixth stage from Piechowice to Karpacz. Voigt beat Czech favourite Ondrej Sosenka (CCC Mat) and Pole Piotr Przydzial (also CCC Mat) at the end of the 128 kilometre stage. One of the Polish favourites (highest ranked Pole in the UCI rankings and seconds in this race last year) Piotr Wadecki didn't start. He was ill at the end of August, and obviously started this TdP not completely cured. He had a fever after stage 5, so instead of starting the toughest stage of the race, went home to Gdynia. So the second Polish favorite, after Polish champion Radoslaw Romanik (CCC-Mat), who earlier retire due to pneumonia, was eliminated from the race because of sickness. The next news for the day was that Race Director Czeslaw Lang decided to shorten the "Queen stage" from 150 to 128 kms - one 21.7 km lap around Karpacz-Orlinek less. The reason was the cold weather - it was around 12 degrees Celsius with strong wind and heavy rain. Despite that, the stage was truly worth its nickname. Even before the peloton entered the laps around Karpacz from the descent from Michalowice (first GPM at 9 km) Piotr Chmielewski (Mróz) crashed, injured his elbow and in fact never really regained contact with the front group, eventually coming 30th with 14:00 deficit. He did not start stage 7 on Sunday morning. More seriously injured were: Igor Bonczukow (Atlas) and Rinaldo Nocentini (Mapei) - both were immediately taken to hospital. Since the stage was short it was very intense, and at kilometre 61 the decisive attack went, and an elite group of five containing Piotr Przydzial (1st in 2000); Czech Ondrej Sosenka (Solidarity Tour-2001 winner) both from CCC-Mat; Jens Voigt (Germany, Credit Agricole); Raimondas Rumsas (Lithuania, Fassa Bortolo) and quite surprisingly in such hilly terrain world champion Romans Vainsteins (Latvia, Domo). Sosenka did most of the work, then Przydzial and Voigt, with help of Rumsas from time to time, Vainsteins was really a passenger. The only real counter-attack from fragmented main group came from Polish neo-pro climber Sylvester Szmyd (Tacconi Sport) first solo, who was later joined by another youngster Kim Kirchen (Luxembourg, Fassa Bortolo). For some time they were losing around 0'50 - 1'00 to the leaders. As the leading five climbed Orlinek for the penultimate time, Vainsteins was dropped, then surprisingly Rumsas too. With 21.7 km to go they started the dangerous, slippery descent from Karpacz Górny with some 0'20 and 0'35 seconds deficit to the three leaders. Rumsas, fourth on GC, fell and broke his collarbone, and he had to retire, losing any chance of a podium place (he was 3rd in 1999), but Vainsteins caught the leaders for while, being dropped a bit later at the foot of the final ascent. With five kilometres to the finish line at Orlinek we had a big trio again at the front of the race. I said big since the average height of these leaders was...193 cm (Voigt 192/77 kg, Przydzial 187/76 kg, while Sosenka ...200/82 kg!!!) and that's on a 6 kilometre climb with sections up to 12%. It was a real battle of the giants on a cold and windy day. With three kilometres to go Voigt had a puncture, and the CCC-Mat duo did not wait, but Przydzial the leader had problems in staying with his super-domestique Sosenka. The Czech rider hesitated too long, and Voigt passed them with few hundred meters to the finish. Coming into the final day he is 18 seconds ahead of Sosenka, and 36 ahead of Przydzial. Voigt is a good time trialist, but has just one teammate left in the race - Frederic Bessy, his CCC rivals are both current ITT champions in their countries and they have 3 other riders in the team to help them perhaps on stage 7 on Sunday morning. Dario Andriotto leader after stage 5, came 18th with 8'08 deficit, never really in contention with the top-5 of the day. Today almost half of the field abandoned, in all 57 riders!, just 68 remained in the race.
