Stage 1 - September 3: Gdansk - Sopot, 178.0 km

Kirsipuu wins stage 1 solo

Estonian Jaan Kirsipuu (Ag2r-Prevoyance) has won the first stage of the Tour of Poland, from Gdansk to Sopot (178 km). Surprisingly, Kirsipuu won with a solo attack on a hill with 5 kilometres to go, heading home Dario Andriotto (Alexia) and Raimondas Vilcynskas (Mróz) by nine seconds.

The first attack of the 58th Tour of Poland came from Ukrainian Serguei Sawielew (Mikomax) just after 9 km from the real start in the Oliwa district of Gdansk. Soon, he was joined by eight more riders: Tomasz Kloczko (CCC-Mat), Rafal Kazmierczak (Servisco), Jan Svorada (Lampre), Fabrice Gougot (Credit Agricole), Innar Mandoja (Ag2R), Claudio Astolfi (Cantina Tollo), Konstantin Siwcow (Itera) and Remigius Lupeikis (Mróz).

For some time their advantage hovered between 30 seconds to 1'00. 40-50 kilometres into the race gap began grow faster, to reach its maximum level of 3'20 at the 52 kilometre mark. That was all that Domo-Farm Frites and Fassa Bortolo teams afford escapes. At 59.4 km just after lake Zarnowiec, the first mountain premium of the race in Sobienczyce (cat.3) awaited the riders. As one could have expected, Kloczko, twice Polish climber's champion, won the GPM.

But behind the breakaway, some big names in the peloton were struggling on the 1.5 km long and quite steep hill - Ivan Quaranta (Alexia) soon abandoned the race!, Tom Steels also was dropped from the main group, later came back to the main pack, but after moment of weakness also retired! Meanwhile the lately in-form Paolo Valoti (Alessio) had the misfortune to crash heavily, and was taken to hospital with knee injuries and a suspected broken leg.

The nine riders persisted with their attack, which went through Krokowa to reach the little town of Karwia on the Baltic coast (by the sea side) at 77 kilometres. For the next 16 kilometres, the peloton rode along side the Baltic coast in an easterly direction, and a couple of these kilometres were cobbled - real "Hell of the North" if you consider that this region is the "North Pole" of the country. Luckily there no big crashes and not too many punctures.

The leaders reached the town of Wladyslawowo at 93 km situated nearby Hel peninsula, and there Lupeikis "sprinted like a devil" ;-) to take the first intermediate sprint of the day in front of the more fancied Svorada. After that, the riders turned south to ride along Puck bay, and there strong westerly wind began to blow from the right side. The peloton soon divided into four bigger pieces. The first group of 39 riders managed to catch escape just before the 2nd intermediate sprint in Puck at 104 km, where the big favourites of the race showed their sprinting skills - Wadecki won ahead of Voigt. The peloton re-grouped, but not completely - some riders, including current Polish champion Radoslaw Romanik later lost from 12 to 21 minutes!

Another attack came from 5 riders: Lupeikis again, Magnus Backstedt (Credit Agricole), Massimo Apollonio (Tacconi Sport), Dimitri Gainitdinow (Tacconi Sport) and Aleksandr Klimenko (Mikomax), but they also were brought back before the third sprint of the day in Rumia at 128 km. Kazimierz Stafiej (Mróz) won there in front of Lauri Aus (Ag2R), but what's more important was that soon after, eleven riders including Backstedt from the previous group of five successfully attacked.

Ruggero Marzoli turned out to be the fastest on GPM no. 2 at Kamienna Góra (also cat. 3) in the district of Gdynia, but later Kloczko remained KoM Leader thanks to his higher place in the stage. As the riders came to streets of Sopot, four of them attacked their companions: the ever present Backstedt, Jaan Kirsipuu (Ag2R, winner of 6 stages in TdP between 1997 and 2000), Raimondas Vilcinskas (Mróz) and Dario Andriotto (Alexia). Interestingly three of these riders come from Baltic countries, and the stage finish was situated in Poland's most famous sea resort on its coast, just 200 metres from its beaches and in front of one of Europe's longest wooden piers.

The leading four quickly gained the gap on the rest, while the peloton (some 90 riders) came into the 6.3 km laps on the streets of Sopot more than 2 minutes behind. The remaining riders from the eleven were caught by big group with 1 lap to go, but the four leaders were much too far from the chasers and they survived with a minute of their advantage.

Kirsipuu obviously was feeling great did not even wait for sprint on the final straight, but attacked his companions with 5 km to go on a short hill and came to the finish line with 9 seconds gap on Andriotto, Vilcinskas and Backstedt in that order. It was a tight finish for 5th place (the peloton), won by Angelo Furlan, a 24 year old neo-pro from Alessio.
