Aussie Duo Take Out Goodwill Triathlon Gold

A crowd of 50,000 packed South Bank parklands today to cheer on the Australians to two gold medals in the 2001 Goodwill Games triathlon events in Brisbane.

Local Brisbane girl Loretta Harrop successfully defended her Goodwill Games women's title by crossing the line with a time of 1.59.44.59, 15.65 seconds in front of silver medallist Barbara Lindquist of the United States.

Fellow Aussie, Nicole Hackett, crossed the line third to clinch bronze with a time of 2.01.13.

The women's event followed hot on the heals of the men's race, which saw Australian Chris McCormack win gold with a time of 1.47.26.

McCormack was joined on the podium by New Zealand duo, Hamish Carter (2nd) and Craig Watson (3rd) with times of 1.47.46 and 1.48.25 respectively.

The 47 men and women triathletes were given a perfect Queensland welcome, with sunny skies and maximum crowds cheering them on through a picturesque course set against a backdrop of the Brisbane river and city skyline.

After her winning race, Harrop dedicated her gold medal to her father, in celebration of Sunday, September 2nd, being Father's Day.

"I felt like the whole of Brisbane was behind me," Harrop said.

"I was trying to pick voices in the crowd, the crowd really got me home. (My performance was) amazing. Three years is a long time since I won at Goodwill in New York. Being father's day, this one's for dad."

Sydney triathlete Chris McCormack, known by his mates as Macca, was pleased with his performance.

"It just felt good out there," McCormack said. "The Goodwill Games was a race I wanted to put on my resume."
